UUM-MAIK COLLABORATION STRENGTHENS THE MANAGEMENT OF WAQF FUND

Waqf by definition is to stop, withhold and prevent, while in term of shari'ah is any property that is withheld by the person making the waqf dedication from any transaction, inheritance, hibah and will, while maintaining its physical resources for the benefit with the intention of bringing the person making the waqf dedication closer to Allah.

In line with fifth ascent in the Malaysia Education Development Plan 2015-2025 (Higher Education) which is Financial Sustainability, all higher education institutions (IPT) have been requested to increase their financial generation, endowment and Waqf.

In this regard, the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Waqf Fund and Endowment Management Joint Committee (JBW) Meeting Number 2 for the year 2021 was held online recently.

The meeting which was chaired by the Deputy President of the Kedah Islamic Religious Council (MAIK), Dato’ Syeikh Yahaya Jusoh was also attended by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani who is the Deputy Chairman from the Vice-Chancellor's Meeting Room.

Several important agendas were discussed including the UUM cash waqf fundraising report as well as the direction and planning of waqf management at the UUM and MAIK levels.

Apart from that, several promotional agendas were also planned by the University in collaboration with MAIK as the sole trustee (mutawalli) of waqf, nazar and amanah in the state of Kedah to strengthen waqf including promotion through billboards around Alor Setar City, Wazabase application and the appointment of Waqf Ambassadors.

Also in attendance were the Kedah State Mufti, Dato' Sheikh Fadzil Awang; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student and Alumni Affairs), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hendrik Lamsali; Bursar, Mdm. Eylani Ahmad as well as UUM and MAIK senior officials.
